Reduce Hydrogen Sulfide in Industrial Processes

Hydrogen sulfide is a byproduct of countless industrial processes, not just wastewater treatment. Anywhere sulfur compounds are present in process water, whether from raw materials, chemical reactions, or the breakdown of organic matter, hydrogen sulfide can form and create the same set of problems: persistent odor that extends beyond a facility’s boundaries, corrosion of process equipment and infrastructure, and safety concerns for personnel working near affected process streams.

This shows up across a wide range of industries: oil and gas operations dealing with sour gas and sour crude, food and beverage processors managing organic-heavy wastewater, tanneries using sulfide-based hide treatment, and paper mills, where bleaching and Kraft pulping process water are a well-documented source of the sulfurous odor associated with areas surrounding mills.

Ultra-S3®, combined with hydrogen peroxide, treats these streams directly, generating hydroxyl radicals that destroy hydrogen sulfide rather than simply masking the odor it causes. Because the chemistry targets the sulfide itself, it can be applied to whichever specific process or wastewater stream is contributing most to a facility’s odor, corrosion, or safety concerns, without requiring changes to the underlying industrial process.

Proven Results in Paper Mill Applications

Paper mills produce multiple hydrogen sulfide-laden streams, so Ultra-S3® treatment isn’t limited to a single injection point. Ultra-S3 has been deployed in industrial settings, including paper mills, to address exactly this kind of sulfide-laden process water. It can be applied wherever sulfide-containing water needs to be addressed, including:

  • Bleaching process water, where hydrogen sulfide is generated as part of the bleaching sequence
  • Kraft process water, where sulfide compounds are inherent to the pulping chemistry
  • General plant wastewater, where sulfides from upstream processes ultimately concentrate before treatment or discharge

Because Ultra-S3 works by directly destroying hydrogen sulfide rather than relying on dilution, adsorption, or masking agents, it can be dosed into whichever stream is contributing most to a mill’s odor profile, without requiring a change to the mill’s core process equipment.

As with other Ultra-S3 applications, dosing is calculated based on the specific sulfide load and flow of the stream being treated, and the underlying hydroxyl radical chemistry is the same proven process used across wastewater treatment plants, lift stations, and industrial scrubbers.
